Negativland’s follow-up album to Escape From Noise grew out of their arguably too-clever-by-half attempt to gain controversy and attention via various knowingly unsupported claims that said earlier album’s song “Christianity Is Stupid” had inspired a mass murder. 1989’s Helter Stupid is split between their own reworking of interviews, broadcasts and more about the case and their purported role in it and a second half dedicated to the Dick Vaughn character created by bandmember Richard Lyons, Vaughn being the world’s most oily DJ supporting the eternal 1970s music revival.
