Sex Packets

Digital Underground

1990
Tommy Boy

Feeling like one shaggy dog story after another, Sex Packets forever put Digital Underground on the map thanks to the fluke smash hit “The Humpty Dance,” itself a perfect follow-on from the previous “Doowutchyalike” single. But the whole was inspired hilarity and musical skill in equal measure, main figure Shock G taking his overwhelming P-Funk love and bringing it to hip-hop in full, resulting in songs both mesmerizing and hilarious like “Underwater Rhymes,” as well as local Bay Area in-jokes like “Gutfest ’89.”
