Flying Microtonal Banana
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
2017
Flightless
The first of 5 albums The Gizz released in 2017 is a face first plunge into the world of microtonality (basically using the tones that exist in between the twelve notes on the scale we’re used to) and god what a dive. Inspired by Middle Eastern tunings and instruments (the zuma and bağlama pop up a few times), the songs within this noble experiment are dark and groove heavy; opener “Rattlesnake” and “Open Water” are each seven minutes of breakneck motorik bliss, and the bookends of “Doom City” signify the emerging flirtations with pure stoner metal that would show up in later albums.
