Ruthless Records

As the follow-up to N.W.A.’s watershed debut, Straight Outta Compton, Efil4zaggin further established Dr. Dre as one of pop music’s most potent producers. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy to hear how the G-funk vibe of Dre’s 1993 album, The Chronic, is previewed all across Efil4zaggin, especially on songs such as “Real Niggaz Don’t Die” and “Alwayz Into Somethin’.” The furious moxie from N.W.A.’s debut still invigorates parts of their sophomore effort but in missing Ice Cube, who had left to pursue a solo career, N.W.A. lost some of their socio-political relevancy. Instead of critiquing institutions of power, ala “Fuck the Police,” the group focused instead on setting a new bar for misogyny in pop music with songs such as “One Less Bitch,” and “She Swallowed It.”
