Slowdive’s second album appeared in the wake of grunge making it seem like there was only one way to rock, but Souvlaki both showed further possibilities of their own carefully sculpted lush sound as well as a tentative but rewarding exploration into other approaches. Whether it was collaborating with Brian Eno on two tracks, which led to an increasing interest in ambient music, the polite but truly involving dub tinge of “Souvlaki Space Station” or the quiet-into-serene roar of “When the Sun Hits,” Slowdive took their model form of shoegaze and expanded its possibilities.
