New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh

Erykah Badu

2010
Universal Motown

As space-age as it is timeless, what could stand as the final studio album of Erykah Badu’s career would be a fitting last testament for the Afrofuturistic chanteuse. She has fun on her cover of Sylvia Stripplin’s “You Can’t Turn Me Away” (performed by way of Junior MAFIA’s “Get Money”). “20 Feet Tall” lays out a parable reminiscent of signature Badu statements like “Bag Lady,” and she stretches out on the closer—the over 10-minute “Out My Mind, Just in Time” —as she has before on extended songs like “Green Eyes” and “Telephone.”
