Pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz have produced some of ECM’s finest trio outings, but perhaps none so atmospherically ambitious as this. In addition to containing fantastic originals from the bandleader’s pen, like “Night Train To You,” the playlist dives into eclectic waters, including tunes by Ornette Coleman, Paul Bley, and Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal. Wasilewski’s ability to shift from monochromatic beginnings to colorful endings is made all the more spectacular by his compatriots’ adoration for the journeys between.
