Drummer Marrku Ounaskari invites pianist Samuli Mikkonen and trumpeter-vocalist Per Jørgensen for this transcendent exploration of Finno-Ugric folksongs, hymns, and inspired improvisations. Despite the acoustic means, they produce an almost-electronic sound, riding the waves of ECM’s reverb-laden oceans as if on a sailboat that never runs out of wind. Originals like “The Gipsy’s Stone” and “Mountain Of Snow” feel cut from the same cloth, upholding the overall spirit of preservation that guides these musicians to retread old paths with new songs.
