Ever more comfortable in the studio, Cheap Trick worked again with In Color producer Tom Werman to continue their initial run of excellent albums with Heaven Tonight. Ever more their own fierce power station of energy in a comparatively anemic power pop wasteland, it was a sparkling balance of their many strengths from a band firing on all fours throughout. The killer generation-gap-in-reverse sentiments of “Surrender” led things off; other highlights included the queasy, beautifully harrowing title track and the building hyperdrama of “Auf Wiedersehn.”
