The Lion and the Cobra

Sinéad O'Connor

1987
Ensign

O’Connor’s debut album remains one of the strongest first full length efforts of the rock era as widely defined, something unafraid to try many different things throughout, by someone who equally felt no fear, never holding back when others might. Singles like “Mandinka” and “I Want Your (Hands On Me)” crackled with late 80s radio energy, while songs like the commanding first track “Jackie” and especially the lengthy — and worth every second of it — emotional character study “Troy” showcased even greater depths.
