Who says black metal can’t be socially conscious? Sole proprietor Ayloss hails from Greece, and he’s channeled his shock and disgust at his government’s indifference towards the refugees fleeing their home countries across the treacherous Mediterranean into his art. This four-track charity EP (which still clocks in at 45 minutes) uses two atmospheric black metal tracks and two ambient tracks to capture the terror and triumphs of one of those immigrants. The hypnotic, Krautrock-inspired rhythms of the black metal songs convey the roiling waters of the ocean and the sheer will to survive of its protagonist. The pulsating electronics of the ambient pieces give the listener a breather – but full knowing that they represent the calm in the eye of this captivating storm.
