4x4 Scorpion has singer/songwriter/producer Zackey Force Funk exploring two sides of his musical persona. The first, highlighted in the opening tracks “Abc My Love” and “Around My Way” is expressed in prototypical modern funk from Los Angeles: upbeat dance-oriented songs that build on the boogie and electro of the 1980s while stripping away unnecessary ornamentation and runtime. Short and potent, these are neon-coated party jams for an era of information overload. The other type of song on the album is that of “ANIMAL” and “SEEING SOUND OF A THOUSAND SUNS” – these tracks actually sound numb, waking dreams framed by synths that sound like they are in the process of melting. Everything is held together by Zackey’s eerie falsetto voice, an unreliable tour guide in his surreal vision of LA.
