Now fully in charge of Tyrannosaurus Rex after firing Steve Peregrin Took, Marc Bolan hired Mickey Finn more for looks than percussive creativity and began the conscious shift away from acoustic folkie to something just a little more rocking. Just a little more — the glam rock rampage familiar from a couple of years later was still incipient, with such numbers as the heavy guitar workout “Elemental Child” pointing a way forward — but on songs like “By the Light of a Magical Moon” and “Woodland Bop,” Bolan’s hippie dreams show more focus and groove than ever.
