Adrian Younge Presents: Something About April
Released
Younge works in the same sort of late Sixties soul territory as Hannah Williams and the Daptone bands, lovingly recreating the feel of late century soul records played by top shelf live musicians. Think Isaac Hayes or Charles Stepney productions and you’re close. The vibe here is high femme, even when the singers are men; very confusingly, the woman on the cover is not April (I think?) or Venice Dawn (a group), and doesn’t seem to be on the album at all. If you wanted Dusty Springfield as Ghostface Killah hears her, this is your thing. (Younge has worked with Ghost, as well as Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, the latter for the Luke Cage soundtrack.)
