While Dominican Republic’s modern party music mostly concentrates on reggaeton, Mula proves that there’s space for brilliant and unique beats that can light up the dancefloor. Opener “Diamantes” sets the tone: shifting beats collide with synths over which hooky vocals deliver the heat. Fusing homegrown sounds like merengue and dembow with trap, house, tribal guarachero, and more, Mula proves to be master shapeshifting producers, most notably in tracks like “Nunca paran,” “Laberinto,” and “Ten cuidado;” the latter which features merengue metal character El Gallo Lester.
