German electronic jazz fusion outfit Triorität are a drums, bass & keys contemporary jazz trio who answered the ‘what should a traditional jazz trio do in the 21st century’ question by incorporating synths, FX and some dance music elements into their compositions, creating a super-sharp, impressive jazz-electronic-disco fusion sound. Their debut album ALG0 from 2020 gives the listener a selection of expertly improvised jazz/jazz adjacent tracks with all the complex musical interplay and dynamic ebb and flow that you’d expect — they’re a jazz trio so obviously their playing is tight and they know how to solo — but the use of hip hop / disco / jazz funk / electronica elements, while understated, give the tracks a futurist feel, and moves several of them near or onto the dancefloor. With jazz, compared to non-improvisational songs, there’s often a far wider range of pace and of dynamics within songs, and ALG0 is full of those gradual rising builds and breaks, and improvised tempestuous crescendos as the band play off each other.

Stormy, futurist space jazz that remains firmly in touch with the funk as well as with the universal cosmic energy.
