An Ever Changing View
There’s an air of simple tranquility, of nature, and of a pastoral aesthetic in this album from UK jazz trumpeter, band leader, label boss and composer Matthew Halsall. The tracks are a series of gently shifting sonic backdrops, made from twinkling bells, softly pattering percussion, electronics and loops, nature samples and field recordings, often with just one or two chords, and filled with kalimbas, marimbas, chimes, glockenspiels, triangles, the sound of mallet upon instrument. The lack of chord progressions contribute to a sense of stillness rather than progress, and as flutes and trumpets drop in and solo the listener remains in a kind of constant sonic present, always travelling never quite arriving. Understated and pretty, light but in no way lightweight, Ever Changing View is a thing of quiet beauty.
