And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
Motorik drumming at low idle, bass and guitar smeared like ambient light in the dead of night, vocals that amplify the longing and sadness in familiar words that suddenly feel personal: this is Yo La Tengo at their most intimate. The mellowness that might smell twee in others’ hands is the sort of meditative that sparks epiphanies — a reverb chamber with a new meaning in each echo. Even the song inspired by a Troy McClure-filmography Simpsons gag is heartrending.
