Saxophonist Joe Henderson’s 1970 live album bridges the gap between hard bop and proto-fusion. George Cables is playing an electric piano, and Lenny White’s drumming blends jazz, rock, and Latin rhythms. Up front, Henderson and trumpeter Woody Shaw are absolutely on fire, playing the melodies in tight unison and delivering solos that fly across the stage like comets. Every time a tune ends, there’s a second of stunned silence before the audience erupts in applause.
