Keith Kenniff has bigger selling records than this — as Helios and doubly so in his solo piano guise Goldmund which has clocked up somewhere close to a quarter billion streams on Spotify alone. But few of his releases can come close to the condensed, poised, melancholy beauty of this 2007 mini albums. There’s a little bit here of latter-day Ryuichi Sakamoto in infinite sustain mode, a little bit of the Krautrock-made-sad-and-delicate of To Rococo Rot, and a lot of the kind of patient pace and ability to hold heavy emotions in their own space that can only come from deep meditation. It is small in some ways, immense in others, very sad and very beautiful.
