If you ever want an illustration of how particular sounds remain viable in their evolutionary niches long after novelty or shock value have worn off, Quebecois band La Securité are perfect. There’s about as much distance between their formation and the early 00s breakthrough days of DFA records as there is between DFA and their original post-punk inspirations – but the style is just right for them, and still has power to make you snap to attention. You could rattle off reference points like The Slits, Gang of Four, X Ray Spex, Ze Records and on, but by this point the funky bass, cowbell galore, jagged guitar clangs and so on are really a kind of folk music, and particularly one suited to a band with a smart, arch, feminist worldview. On their 2026 second album they really pulled it together – clearly honed through serious gigging – and made it their own, and sound like a fantastic, switched-on party to boot.
