Bring the Family

On this album, a particular constellation of stars aligned to create a once-in-a-lifetime musical event. Slide guitarist Ry Cooder, bassist Nick Lowe, and drummer Jim Keltner joined Hiatt for a set of songs that explored the dynamics of family life, romantic love, and the musical and culinary joys of Memphis, all with a level of emotional maturity that was (and still is) unusual in pop music. The album wasn’t really a hit, but Bonnie Raitt’s version of “Thing Called Love” was a major hit for her, and jazz guitarist Bill Frisell made “Have a Little Faith in Me” part of his regular live set. The quartet tried to recapture the magic when they reformed later as Little Village, but this was an example of lightning striking only once.
