The debut LP by the then-named Common Sense, Can I Borrow A Dollar? may surprise younger fans of the Chicago rapper. Before he became an icon of hip-hop positivity, then-teenager Common was more playful and impudent here, flexing a more elastic flow (with the occasional squeak). No I.D. (then known as Immenslope) and Twilite Tone handled the lion’s share of the production, showing that Chicago’s beat makers could hang with their East and West Coast counterparts with their choice taste in jazz samples.
