Cerrone 3: Supernature

Released

The stuff of Daft Punk dreams and Gaspar Noé nightmares, Cerrone’s third album took the French drummer/producer’s shamelessly libido-addled take on disco and rebuilt it from the ground up. It’s as though he’d heard Moroder’s all-synth mastercraft in the service of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” a few months previous and gotten so simultaneously infatuated and unnerved that he decided his best use of this new form of Eurodisco would be to enlist songwriter Lene Lovich to craft a side-long pulp-horror suite about genetically mutated killer animals. If that sounds hard to get down to, it is absolutely 100% not, even when things slow down to the tempo of a Jacques Torneur noir for “In the Smoke.” And the second side’s “Give Me Love”/”Love Is Here”/”Love Is The Answer” medley ensures that there’s still enough agreeably horny gimme some euphoria to go around.
