The Codex Speciálník (Special Songbook) dates to around 1500 and was found in a Prague monastery. Containing works by renowned and anonymous composers alike, it is a treasure trove of Renaissance polyphony. While much of the recital rewards those expecting the rich textures as only Hilliard Ensemble’s four voices can achieve, the most precious gems of the collection are the artfully constructed duets. Their scope is surprising and gives us insight into the sketches behind the paintings, so to speak. A special songbook indeed that allows us to appreciate the development of old music in new ways.
