The only album the Young Marble Giants ever created was all that was needed to point a way forward for bands worldwide ever since. Not quite a home recording but with the focused intimacy of one, Colossal Youth had guitar and bass interplaying in a way that the Moxham brothers once described as being like knitting while Allison Statton sang about everyday concerns and quiet unease and frustration with the air of direct conversation. So much indie pop since has aimed for that level, but Colossal Youth remains first among equals.
