Creative Improvisation Ensemble

Released

Reed players Marion Brown and Leo Smith hail from two different regions and disciplines, but come together for Creative Improvisation Ensemble, a fascinating one-off recorded one summer in Paris in 1970 (before reconvening a few years on for Brown’s Geechee Recollections). Brown made his name recording with John Coltrane on Ascension and recording for New York labels like ESP-Disk and Impulse, while Smith gained renown in playing with the likes of Anthony Braxton and the AACM. A spontaneous blowing date that toggles between small hand percussion breaks and the two trading squawks as free as a lark.
