Their references may skew towards British distilled sonic sensibilities (think David Sylvian, Penguin Cafe, Vini Reilly, Tara Clerkin Trio, Jonny Nash’s Melody as Truth label), but the music put out on the cherished London Last Resort label (and NTS radio show) mostly emanates from America. The Midwest, to be more precise, as the Lemon Quartet lists Akron, Ohio as its base of operations. Comprised of Corey Farrow, Gabriel Schray, Keith Freund, and Stephen Clements, the quartet’s debut Crestless is a low-key wonder. Slow-crawling horns and keys, bass that grows and recedes like a morning fog, twinkling electronics and contemplative woodwind lines, the quartet moves with a dreamlike purpose, crafting an eloquent morning listen.
