DJ-Kicks

Released

Moodymann’s second commercially available mix CD following his 2006 Moodymann Collection came a decade later and was released through the suitably illustrious DJ Kicks series. Opening with half an hour of steamy soul and moody hip-hop electronics, he gradually ups the tempo and intensity via a broad selection that includes retro soundtracks from instrumentalist/composer Shawn Lee’s, José González’s acoustic folk and Nigerian psych-rock from Tirogo. There’s plenty of more orthodox club music too, although again, the fact that the straight-up soulful house of Soulful Session’s Hostile Takeover and vocal cuts from Joeski and Kings of Tomorrow sit comfortably on the same mix as Flying Lotus and Little Dragon speak to the brand musical sweep his mix takes in. Superbly selected and excellently programmed, guaranteed to introduce you to some quality music you didn’t know you didn’t know.
