Even before dubstep and grime were fully spectated, they were already throwing off maverick variants in all directions. Just as The Bug was hearing apocalyptic dancehall in the 140bpm half-step beats, and Various Productions spotted opportunities for their more varied but equally dark experiments, so Jamie Teasdale and Roly Porter aka Vex’d heard an opportunity to rebuild rave music from scratch. The tracks here have the overwhelming jagged snare/clap syncopations of grime, the tightly controlled wobble and open space of dubstep, but they also bring in the steamroller momentum and industrial soundscaping of Ed Rush / DJ Trace style techstep, slowed down to fit… and the fusion is terrifyingly perfect. These monstrous tunes occupied a space all their own when they first emerge and they still do now.
