Dial “M” For Motherfucker

On their SugarShit Sharp EP, Pussy Galore designed a logo that combined the Rolling Stones’ lips-and-tongue symbol with Einstürzende Neubauten’s sharp-limbed stickman; this 1989 follow-up sounds exactly like that, only better. Junkyard percussion and well-chosen samples (most notably the 2 Live Crew’s chant “hey, we want some pussy”) bolster rip-roaring ’70s rock riffs, as frontman Jon Spencer jabbers and howls in a Mick Jagger-meets-Nick Cave spasm. The songs are noisy, yes, but as a result of painstaking choices and careful execution, and they rock, too. “Understand Me,” “Kicked Out,” and “Dick Johnson” are positively anthemic.
