Canadian collective of musicians of pan-Asian descent soundtrack an anime that never existed in this remarkable concept record. Clearly influenced by works like Akira and the films of Hayao Miyazaki, Dirt gives a look at a treacherous journey to a post-cataclysmic planet through progressive metal that ranges from peaceful (“Someplace”) to straight-up raging blasts of rhythmic thrash (“Yandere”). Things get especially wild on “Hungry Ghost” and the title track as the team of mercenaries cautiously approach their goal (collecting the last pure soil sample) and the traumatized environment fights back.
