Doggystyle
Released
As much as Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, released a year prior, was Snopp Dogg’s coming-out party, Doggystyle may have well been a coronation of a new king of the West, drawl and all. If nothing else, Doggystyle highlighted how the Long Beach rapper could be laid-back sounding yet totally menacing or playfully charming (or painfully misogynistic). It also helped to have Dre at the height of his g-funk mastery, with Doggystyle arguably sounding even better than The Chronic. Either way, the hits off of Doggystyle can still be heard in parties up and down the California coast today: “Gin and Juice,” “Ain’t No Fun,” “The Shiznit,” etc.
