Part of the “Peaceville Three” trio of Brit bands that helped solidify the death-doom genre in the late eighties-early nineties, by 1995 the members of Paradise Lost had gone through some bad breakups or listened to a lot of Sisters of Mercy or something, because they mostly ditched the death and went for the pure emotional punch of goth metal. Heavy as a broken heart and as melodic as a razor blade playing across a wrist tendon, they play for the back row with morbid masterpieces like “Forever Failure” and “Hallowed Land.”
