Robert Fripp’s first solo album, released shortly before he re-formed King Crimson as a tight, disciplined purveyor of avant-New-Wave prog rock, finds him getting a bit weird in ways that the more sprawling prog of earlier Crimson work doesn’t really anticipate. There are gorgeous Frippertronic soundscapes, off-kilter pop (notably featuring Daryl Hall, semi-successful attempts at hard-rocking postpunk, and a stunning rendition of Peter Gabriel’s “Here Comes the Flood” on which Fripp’s layered guitars beautifully complement Gabriel’s piano and vocal. And there are some delightfully snotty swipes at the record industry. A must for fans.
