Taking a turn away from the sheer glowering intensity of Sleep No More, Fiction found the Comsat Angels aiming for a more contemplative, even at times warm approach, audible not only in the sound and title of opening number “After The Rain” but also in the sweeter cool tones of Stephen Fellows’s vocals. There’s also hints, subtle but evident, about their shift to a more commercially straightforward sound in albums to come, as in the twisted art-funk of “Zinger,” while a revisit of an earlier rarity, “Ju Ju Money,” serves as a marker for continuing evolution.
