It’s a bit much to say Flesh + Blood invented the new romantics, but the sense of absolute slick focus and presentation common to both is paramount in the best fashion, and little surprise the older veterans had it down. Bryan Ferry’s persona is now firmly locked into that of someone simultaneously world-weary and up for anything to alleviate the ennui, and if the Byrds and Wilson Pickett covers are mere formalism, the originals are perfectly polished beauties, whether the effusively blue feelings of “Over You” and “Oh Yeah” or in contrast “Same Old Scene”’s dramatic dance punch.
