By this point in their career, Hüsker Dü had basically become two different bands: the one that played drummer Grant Hart’s songs, and the one that played guitarist Bob Mould’s songs. Flip Your Wig is pretty evenly split between the two, and on this one it’s Mould’s songs that win: “Hate Paper Doll,” “Makes No Sense at All,” and, especially, “Divide and Conquer” are among the best tracks these guys ever recorded. These songs are pop punk from before there was such a thing as pop punk, and they’re a refreshing blast of melodic noise.
