Sly & the Family Stone

1973
Epic

Sly flipped the Family Stone’s lineup for the first time on Fresh (Rusty Allen on bass guitar, Andy Newmark on drums), after certain band members took to the wind following There’s a Riot Goin’ On. Rumors of Sly’s sleeping with Doris Day gave the band’s cover of “Qué Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” an extra level of meta. “If You Want Me to Stay” remained quotable for all the years Sly chose not to stay, disappearing like funk music’s Howard Hughes. Most importantly, Fresh is the final album that truly upholds the band’s legacy.
