Primus emerged barely two months into the 1990s and became one of the defining bands of the decade. The initial trio of bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander, took the still-new genre of funk metal out behind the barn and blew it to smithereens. Expertly mixed, the clattering drums, needle sharp guitars, and beat-to-hell rubbery bass conjure up images of blue collar hellscapes, ghostly fishermen, gluttony in all forms, and burnt-out stoner malaise. Rarely do you play album one and hear the sound of a band as fully formed in ethos and execution as Primus.
