From the Fire
From The Fire is the accomplished debut from trumpeter and producer Audrey Powne, who wrote, composed and arranged the entire album as well as singing and playing piano, organ and Rhodes. It’s an expansive, sumptuous yet delicate-sounding album, which freely modulates between the rules and boundaries of jazz, classical and R’n’B, resulting in an epic, beautifully orchestrated celestial soul-jazz collection.
It’s sonically and thematically cohesive; From The Fire’s introductory overture — an angelic, cinematic trumpet and strings piece — serves as a perfectly pitched warm-up for the title track, the piano motif of which is revisited in the gently swinging and criminally short (1.57) “Interlude 2,” and running through the entire album is a gentle, glowing intensity that leads to many beguiling melodic moments. An album of cosmic soul, cinematic jazz, 21st-century blues and heavenly R’n’B.
