Post-rock piss-takers went back to 1982 for their 1999 magnum opus, paving the way for neo-Krautrockers like Zombi and Maserati. The Vocodered words have mostly yet to be translated by online archaeologists but they add a retro-future flavor that meshes well with the lo-fi synthesizers and jangly guitars. The motorik drive of “Futureworld” has less to do with the dystopian sci-fi sequel and everything to do with our dystopian world made impersonal by uncaring machines. It’s a deceptive record – while songs like “Television Eyes” and “Cocaine Computer” feel very 80s, this could only have been made by disillusioned children of the Reagan era.
