Pianist David Virelles is one of the most idiosyncratic musicians in the ECM roster, one who digs fervently around his Cuban roots to expose valuable traditions on the verge of being lost. Gnosis does that and more, further showcasing his abilities as a composer. With poet/percussionist Román Díaz and a band of immense acuity, he sharpens his sword through solo pianism and arrangements for strings. Bassist Thomas Morgan and flutist Allison Loggins-Hull add depth and texture. Yet it is Díaz who captures us, drawing on secret pasts with a voice that shakes the ground in which they are buried.
