This guy who I was convinced was French is actually from Pennsylvania, but he still feels French. His way of melody and soft edges has some roots in things like Mac Demarco and Pavement, which doesn’t solve for the Frenchness. It’s the ease with keeping it light and purely joyful that puts me in mind of Phoenix and Daft Punk, neither of whom he sounds remotely like. It’s the embrace of pleasure without any hip framing that makes Alex G valuable. He’s just playing his guitar and making his little gummy bear songs leave him alone!
