Savatage

1987
Atlantic

One of the most remarkable bounce-backs in metal history, theatrical prog outfit Savatage rebounded from their major label-mandated hair metal disaster Fight for the Rock with this plunge into the pitch-dark depths of the Mines of Moria. With the help of fresh collaborator Paul O’Neill (who would work with the band for the remainder of their career), the Oliva brothers bring ugliness on the vocal (Jon) and guitar shred (Chris) side. “Beyond the Doors of the Dark” and “Strange Wings” provide memorable encounters, but it’s the melodic thrash monstrosity of the title track that unleashes the Balrog.
