The fantastical tales echo classic dark fantasy while working as explorations of the self and the effects of crippling fear. Something the band isn’t afraid of: traditional metal solos that liven up the trudging tempos and make their heaviness feel even more widescreen. Only five tracks but each one’s a keeper. Whether it’s “Above the Water”’s initial buoyancy or “Beyond the Door”’s nod to Icon-era Paradise Lost, Hunted provides a multi-faceted look into a well-examined genre that feels just as fresh as the brisk Coloradan air.
