Eleni Mandell strikes a fascinating balance between regret, whimsy, and a kind of sweet and melancholy irony on this stylistically hard-to-pin-down album. There are definitely hints of country here — some raunchy bottleneck guitar on “Who You Gonna Dance With,” pedal steel sighing in the background on several other tracks — but the overall vibe is a sort of mid-century cabaret dream pop. “Now We’re Strangers” is a curiously affectless kiss-off song, while the title track is one of the most emotionally affecting songs I’ve ever heard.
