Basement 5 were part of what Bob Marley called the ‘punky reggae party,’ with key figures from the punk milieu, like Don Letts and Richard Dudanski, passing through their ranks. Their vision really coalesced, though, when artist and vocalist Dennis Morris took the reins. In Dub warps material from their sole album, 1965-1980 – it’s even more arresting than its parent album, with great waves of fuzzed-out guitar washing through “Paranoiaclaustrophobia Dub,” echo patterns spiralling into a phasing vortex on “Holocaust Dub,” a fierce guitar solo sucked into silence through “Immigrant Dub,” while a subtly insistent rhythm section pushes the music ever-forward.
