In The Light
Released
In The Light was recorded in 1973, a year before Luminessence, and like its successor features classical compositions by the intrepid pianist. The program opens with Metamorphosis for flute and strings, fronting Willi Freivogel in a carefully controlled bird’s-eye view. Short Piece For Guitar And Strings (with Ralph Towner on nylon) and In The Cave, In The Light (meshing Jarrett’s pianism with percussion and orchestra) make for tantalizing fare, while a sampling of chamber works, including a string quartet and experiments in gospel-Baroque pastiche for piano, keeps us sharp.
