Init Ding

Microstoria

1995
Mille Plateaux

Listening back to Init Ding is an odd experience – it stills feels alive with opportunities, as though no one quite followed through on the music that Jan St. Werner (of Mouse On Mars) and Markus Popp (of Oval) were making together. Due to the time it was release – mid ‘90s, peak electronica – it was saddled with the ‘glitch’ tag, but this is closer to the sidereal sound experiments of Coil in their ELpH / Worship The Glitch phase, when they were channelling spectral electronics from the ether. For Microstoria, though, swap out the mysticism for a very grounded sense of play and improvisation, and you’ve got a good sense of the curious, squirming, elusive clock and ticker tones strewn through Init Ding.
